LTC Darryl K. (Butch) Woolfolk is the current Chair of the Afghanistan/Pakistan (AfPak) Program and a military faculty member at the National Defense University/College of International Security Affairs. He has served as an AfPak Hand since July 2016. He completed his first Hand tour in April, 2018 after serving as the Senior Train, Advise and Assist Mentor to the Afghan National Army Special Operations Command School of Excellence at Camp Commando, Afghanistan. As Senior Mentor, he led a diverse multi-national team of Special Operations Advisors providing mentoring and partnership in Special Operations recruiting, training and skill development.

Prior to joining the AfPak Hand program, LTC Woolfolk served from 2013 to 2016 as the U.S. Army Exchange Instructor at the Canadian Army Command and Staff College (CACSC) in Kingston, Ontario. As a member of the CACSC Directing Staff, he was responsible for instructing and mentoring Canadian Armed Forces captains and majors in battalion and brigade tactics and staff procedures. He also provided subject matter expertise on maneuver warfare, armor and reconnaissance capability employment, campaign planning and counter-insurgency operations.

LTC Woolfolk has had extensive operations experience during a career spanning 34 years, in both the Active Army and U.S. Army Reserve. His assignments include tactical and operational units, in both command and staff positions. He has garnered 54 months of combat experience; including Operation Desert Shield/Desert Storm, Operation Iraqi Freedom (2003-2004), Operation Enduring Freedom (2007-2008 and 2010-2011) and the Resolute Support Mission (2017-2018).

LTC Woolfolk is a 1985 graduate of the United States Military Academy and received his commission in Armor. He holds a Bachelor of Science degree from USMA. He is a 2000 graduate of the Army Command and General Staff College and a 2019 graduate of the National Defense University, from which he was awarded a Master of Arts degree in Strategic Security Studies. Among his military awards and decorations are the Bronze Star Medal, the Defense Meritorious Service Medal, the Joint Commendation Medal, the Southwest Asia Service Medal and the Afghanistan and Iraq Campaign Medals. He speaks both German and Dari (Afghan Farsi). LTC Woolfolk and his wife, DeLisa, have been married for 29 years and have two adult children.
