John McNamara is a career member of the Senior Foreign Service. He has served in a variety of Department of State positions in Washington and abroad. He most recently was the Deputy Director of the Office of Mexican Affairs, and in previous Washington postings, he served as the Senior Venezuela Desk Officer and Political Officer in the Office of Mexican Affairs. He also served multiple tours at the U.S. Embassy in Bogota, including as the Political Counselor during the final two years of the Colombian government’s peace negotiations with the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC). 

Additionally, in Iraq he was assigned to the Regional Embassy Office-Al-Hillah as a Provincial Advisor, and in a later tour, he was the Deputy of the Ministry of Interior Transition Team in East Baghdad. In Afghanistan, he served as Deputy of the Kandahar Provincial Reconstruction Team, and in a subsequent tour, he led the International Narcotics and Law Enforcement Affairs section at Embassy Kabul. 

Prior to the Foreign Service, he was a United States Army officer. He served as an Infantry officer and later commanded a Special Forces (SF) “A” Team, two SF Companies, and a SF Battalion. He also served in a variety of staff positions, to include a tour on the Joint Staff. He earned his Bachelor of Science degree from the United States Military Academy at West Point and his Master of Arts degree from the United States Army Command and General Staff College at Fort Leavenworth.
