Dr. Christopher Marsh

Professor, Joint Special Operations Master of Arts

Dr. Christopher Marsh (Ph.D. in political science, University of Connecticut) is Professor of International Security Studies at NDU’s Joint special Operations Master of Arts (JSOMA) program, where he teaches and conducts research on Russian and Chinese approaches to special operations, irregular warfare, military strategy, and foreign policy. Prior to joining NDU, Dr. Marsh was the Director of the Department of Research & Analysis at the Joint Special Operations University, U.S. Special Operations Command (USSOCOM). Formerly, he was a Professor of National Security and Strategic Studies at the School of Advanced Military Studies (SAMS). Before joining SAMS, he taught international terrorism and irregular warfare at the US Air Force Special Operations School. Prior to that he was a full professor of political science (with tenure) at Baylor University where he taught for 12 years. He has been a visiting research fellow at the Russian Academy of Science and Tsinghua University (Beijing).

Dr. Marsh is the author of several books, including Unparalleled Reforms: China’s Rise, Russia’s Fall, and the Interdependence of Transition (2006), Religion and the State in Russia and China (2011), and Russian Foreign Policy (2014), co-authored with Nikolas Gvosdev of the U.S. Naval War College. Additionally, Dr. Marsh has published over 100 book chapters and journal articles on topics ranging from religion in Russia to Chinese strategy toward Taiwan. He is currently writing a book on China’s Special Operations Forces and is editing the Routledge Handbook of Special Operations, along with James Kiras and Martijn Kitzen.
